I’d say a Jay Black creation to try and put into production something that
John Suhr was doing as hand wound pickups. Jay and I did quite a bit of
listening and comparing thanks to a slide in slide out quick change
pickguard/guitar he made. I actually didnt really find out Jay was doing
these until they already had a name. I felt the TX specials were a little
too agessive in the upper midrange, kind of nasty for my taste.

Yes I was actually there and even though I was working parallel with pickups
at the custom shop this was a Black idea to try and actually put something
more along the lines of what I was hand winding into production. He probably
knew that I felt it couldnt be done unless you use a computerized winder
that is capable of a 1000 changes in winding technique for a pickup. This is
the kind of winder that I own now but didnt have access to then.

Yes I did mean that I can have 1000 programs to wind one pickup. I actually
usually only use about 60 programs though per pickup. Believe it or no it
makes a big difference and it’s repeatable unlike hand winding.
