Aside from the pickup and whammy differences, the “plus deluxe” version
of the American strats have, or at least had, a slab of wood for the body
that differs from the American Standard. I bought a plus deluxe a few
years ago, and it has two woods layered for the body, but I forget which
ones. You could plainly hear the difference in tone when playing the plus
deluxe alongside an American Standard without and amplifier. The Plus
Deluxe has more sustain and volume in the unamplified sound, which
appealed to me. The American Standard, which I believe is a single slab
of wood, has a brighter crisper sound — more the traditional strat sound.

Buy the Book!

I cleaned up my tab for Sonny Boy's Help Me and made it into a short book. There's a Kindle version for 99 cents, and if you buy the paperback you get the Kindle free.
