Who sells the kit? The components cost is under $2, so the
price probably reflects shipping, packaging and drool-proof
instructions.

It’s okay. More upper bass, more drive. I wouldn’t call it
“silky-sweet” though. Some folks really like it for its
better control over soft distortion. It’s a nice stocking
stuffer.

This is geek-speak to most folks, so get in touch with
a repair tech if it seems too arcane.
Given a TS-5, replace resistors R34 and R35 with values
of 100 ohms and 10K ohms, respectively. Replace the op-amp
with anything but what’s in there. The TL072 or TL082 work
very well, in my opinion, but premium 4558’s are supposedly
preferred. It’s not that important.

They are close. The circuit topologies are identical. Only
a few components have been changed. In principle, you can
interconvert a TS-5, TS-9, and TS-808.
