THe cigar box amp posted should work well enough.
Here’s my suggestion to make a cheap electric guitar amp.
Components:
a) Mono cassete player- you can get it for $5 at a yard sale.
b) a 1/4″ jack and some wire.
Assembly procedure:
De-solder the playback head and solder the 1/4″ jack to the two
wires.
Playing Instructions:
Plug into the 1/4″ jack and press ..well.. PLAY! (duh)
Turn up the volume to full.
Evaluation notes:
The sound is very compressed and distorted with super long sustain
and squealing feeedback(especially with a rickenbaker)
Works best with a humbucker.
You can almost get a clean tone if you turn down the volume on your
guitar.
I used a minimus7 speaker with it and got suprising results on tape!
A guy I know built one of these years ago and once I heard it had
to make on for myself(this is a great Xmas gift for someone who
needs an amplifier).
On mine I started removing things like the motor etc and finally just
said screw it and installed the circuit board and speaker into an
empty Kraft Dinner Box.
It’s a Cheezy amp but it gets lots of laughs. :}
