Steve’s Noble should have 6V6s. When he brought it over, someone else had
slapped in the 6L6s and a 5AR4 rectifier. The combination overvoltaged
the cathode bypass cap on the output stage and it failed. Also, the stock
250 ohm bias resistor was too low and the tubes were cooking. Lastly (and
I’ve NEVER seen this before), the amp had several open plate load
resistors on the preamp tubes.
The amp got a cap job, a few new resistors and it was back in business. I
had to do all this without a schematic. Educated guesses. Sounds a
little weak for guitar, but sounds real warm and nice for harp. The P12Q
is in great shape.
