Premier Twin-8 Going on Sale
Going on eBay 6/23
I just got this 1966 Premier Twin-8 in and was able to get it working. It needed a new volume pot; the old one was corroded so bad that I had to drill it out. It also needed a new rectifier diode so I put 4 new diodes in - in series the way Fender does on its big amps in order to keep them cool. In the future it may need new filter caps, but the ones on it seem to be holding up well. The caps last longer when the amp is used and this is a good useful and used amp.
It has that cool Twin-8 harp tone and I when I do a side-by-side test with my 1958 Twin-8, I can't tell the difference. The sound you get from the single 6L6 driving the two original 8 inch speakers is incredible. It sounds as loud as a Deluxe and you would swear it has two 6V6's in it. The Tremelo works and has that subtle Premier sound. The knob only controls speed and there is no tremelo intensity control.
Everyone who hears it compliments me on the sound. At the Jam, however, it did not cut through the SRV players with their Twin-reverbs. It would have to be mic'ed to compete with a couple of loud guitar players. I am told that it is the perfect studio amp and I have guitar player who wants to borrow for a CD that his band is working on. Yeah, a guitar player is in love with this amp.
Cosmetically, it has been knocked around a bit and I didn't spend any time cleaning it. It lost the premier knobs along the way and I put a few interesting vintage knobs on it to spice it put. The corrosion that killed the volume pot is evident on the control panel as a loss of the brass plating in one place. The back panel was removed and not replaced at one time and it now has a piece of pegboard protecting fingers from the high voltage.
I am putting this on eBay because the tech crash has made a good Java/JSP/ASP/VB/Oracle programmer obsolete and I can't get work. I need to replace the axle on my wife's car and this sale will help pay for it.
I will start it at $150 and I am hoping to get $220 for the thing. This will pay for my original investment plus the tubes and parts that I had to replace. It weighs about 25 lb. and will cost about $15 to ship most places in the USA.
