Premier Model 71 and 75 Amplifiers

The Model 71 has a big power transformer and two 6L6 power tubes. It has a string of 12AT7 or 12AX7 tubes driving the preamp stages. It also uses a 12AT7 or 12AU7 for the tremelo. It has a 12 inch Jensen Special Speaker and two 3 inch little Jensen Specials acting as tweeters. It was made in the late 1950's and had as much power as the Fender Bassman. It is loved by harp players as well as guitar players.

Here's a Model 71 from ebay. Even as a basket case it's got class!

The last is a junked Model 71 which a bought for $25. (I am leaving the price tag on it - even if I get it to work.) The year off the pots is 1959. It has a place for a 12" speaker. It has the two original tweeters. It is typical Premier design with the main chassis on the bottom and the controls on top. It has a tremelo circuit. The real shame is that is missing the knobs. Everything else looks like it's there. The tubes have been stolen, but the chassis looks complete and there don't appear to be any burns anywhere. It didn't die, it just faded away.

It's Alive! It's Alive. My 71 is alive and really rocks. The tube list is right. I fixed the power cord (actually replaced it with a three prong grounded cord.) I replaced a bad filter cap. I tubed it up and then retubed it (bad 5u4 tube). I put an Eminence speaker into it and new grill cloth (although I am told that I put the grill cloth in sideways). I put a new leather handle on it and gave it a good bath.

It has an arcing problem somewhere inside that only happens when I play harp. The guitar guys loved it. They could crank it up and get a great tub crunch sound out of it. The 5U4 and the two 6L6's give it about 30 to 35 watts. The power transformer is a monster, but the output transformer is smaller than some that I've seen. The bad news is that I can't find the $25 price tag to put back on it.

Model 75

I have some pictures, but no info. Anyone hae one of these guys? What are the tubes, what are the knobs? How does it sound.

I cleaned up my tab for Sonny Boy's Help Me and made it into a short book. There's a Kindle version for 99 cents, and if you buy the paperback you get the Kindle free.
