New JT30 Forum

I've tried this in the past, but hackers and spammers have sent me running for the hills. The software seems to be a little better now, so I installed a forum where you can ask questions about mics, amps and gear. There is even a place to sell your old crap.

The New JT30 Forum.

It is not often the element. Elements don't buzz. It is in the cable or the connection. It might (but not likely) be a loose connection inside the mic or a cold solder that has broken. The humming starts when the mic is not properly grounded. This can happen if the wire to the mic is broken, as in a bad cable, or if the connection is not grounded correctly. Sometimes the connection between the shell of the mic and the outside of the connector corrodes and the connection is lost. First, try a different cable and adapter. If you have an XLR connection make sure that you are using a High Impedance cable which is wired differently from a standard vocal type XLR cable. If it is a guitar type cable borrow one from a guitar player that you know works. On a standard old mic connection - sometimes called Amphenol or Switchcraft 2501 - use a soldering iron to heat up the center bead on the connector and add a drop of solder to it to raise it up just a bit. Open the mic and touch all the solder connections briefly with the hot soldering iron. A hot soldering iron can kill an element so make sure that you don't get the element hot. Just touch the hot iron to the connection and give the solder a chance to get shiny. If that is not it, you may have to re-seat the connector on the mic so it makes better contact with the shell of the mic. You should look around and see if there is a harp player around who can help you with this. Older mics get hums all the time and need to be re-soldered or tightened up. Odds are anyone who has been playing harp for more than a few years has experienced this. On XLR versions of the JT-30 and Blues Blaster it is most often from using a vocal type cable that will buzz or not work at all. XLR is wired differently on these mics and you can't use a standard xlr cable.

Buy the Book!

I cleaned up my tab for Sonny Boy's Help Me and made it into a short book. There's a Kindle version for 99 cents, and if you buy the paperback you get the Kindle free.
